Ok I have a weird problem

I have a quad core 6Gb HP Laptop. Been running ok up until a couple of days ago.

I had Cyberlink Power Director installed on it and was using it for about a year with no issues. The other day I tried to import an mpeg file into it and it just froze for about 20 seconds then shut down. I tried it a few more times with the same file and with other video files and it instantly froze and shut down again.

I tried using Windows movie maker and the exact same thing happened.

I then tried to install Corel Video Studio but it froze and restarted while trying to install it, so didn't even get as far as importing media files.

I'm at my wits end because I had no problems before and do a lot of video editing, now I cant seem to run ANY video editing programs!

I've tried restoring to an earlier time but it has not helped.

Any ideas?

Please make the system crash, and then make this report.  You may want to start the temperature monitor (the last line of the quote) before you make the system crash.  That way you can see if it's a temperature problem.:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Also, try blowing out the vents with canned air (DO NOT USE an air compressor or a vacuum - they can damage the system)

Use the laptop on a hard surface, and maybe even use a cooling pad with it.
